STEM CELLS FOR STOMACH

Published on 1 August 2023

In the human gut stomach stem cells regenerate our intestinal lining every week or so. In addition, these cells develop into gut-specific tissues, such as enteroendocrine cells (EECs), which release hormones.

Creating EECs that release insulin can become an important therapeutic strategy for type 1 diabetes patients suffering from insufficient insulin production.

Researchers from the United States translated this possibility into action by turning human stomach stem cells into insulin-producing cells that respond to glucose levels similar to healthy pancreatic beta cells.

In the latest study, scientists extracted stomach stem cells through a non-invasive process known as endoscopy, which involves a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera that allows the operator to take tissue samples.

After converting these stem cells into beta-like cells called insulin-secreting insulin gastric cells, they were grown into tiny organoid clusters. These organelles reacted quickly to glucose releasing insulin in just ten days.

Before proceeding with clinical trials, scientists are planning to improve their technique, including increasing the scale of production of beta-like cells for human transplantation. Crucially, they are also focused on producing such cells which would become less vulnerable to the attack of the immune system that destroys beta cells in patients with type 1 diabetes.

GENE OF REJUVENATION

Published on 1 August, 2023

Scientists from the University of Bristol (UK), together with their colleagues from Italy, discovered an «anti-ageing» gene. It is known that people who have lived 100 years or more are less prone to cardiovascular diseases. Scientists came to the conclusion that longevity is associated not only with a healthy lifestyle but also with a genetic predisposition.

The authors of the scientific work identified the LAV-BPIFB4 gene, which helps to maintain the heart healthful. When it was introduced to older mice, their hearts began to work as well as in middle-aged rodents. Scientists noted that the gene could rejuvenate the human heart for 10 years.

The study lasted three years. Experiments were also conducted with human cell cultures. Heart cell samples from elderly patients with heart disease were exposed to the gene and the true rejuvenation process began.  Pericytes (cells that promote the growth of new vessels) were again able to perform their functions which were lost due to ageing.

Scientists are currently preparing for clinical trials to test the impact of the protein on humans.

VACCINES AGAINST CANCER TUMORS

Published on 1 August 2023

Developed by Moderna Inc and Merck & Co, the experimental mRNA cancer vaccine has reduced the risk of death or relapse of the deadliest skin cancer by 44% compared to immunotherapy.

« The mRNA technology to Keytruda activates the immune response. The findings suggest that adding a personalized cancer vaccine based on this technology can extend the time without patients relapsing or dying», said Dr. Jeffrey Weber of NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center.

The vaccine is produced based on the analysis of the patient’s tumor after surgical removal. Scientists are trying to train the immune system to recognize and attack specific mutations in cancer cells.

Keytruda from Merck has been approved for the treatment of melanoma and many other kinds of cancer. It belongs to a class of widely used immunotherapies known as check point inhibitors designed to turn off the PD-1 protein.

PLASTIC OPERATIONS OF SHOW BUSINESS

Published on 1 August 2023

Celebrities are not a special caste of people who have unique operations performed, that makes them fundamentally different from all other people. What plastic surgery is most often performed on show business stars?

Stars often have a breast lift performed using the method of inverted letter T. or as it is also called — anchor technique.

The second most popular operation among public figures is the operation to correct the size and shape of the breast using silicone implants. Operations to correct the size and shape of the breast in the world practice are often combined with an operation to correct the contours of the body — liposuction. This procedure involves the elimination of excess fat deposits in the trap areas (abdomen, thighs) using special cannula tubes.

Fatty balls of Bichat are fat areas under the cheekbone, removing them, you can achieve more prominent «dimples» in this area. There is such a concept of «star cheekbones» — it means elegant, sharper forms of the face just in the cheekbone zone.
